The six toed cat holding his paw up on a neon street at night

THESIX TOEDCAT

Five is the standard. I came with a spare, and I have never once been asked to explain it politely.

The count

I HAVE
COUNTED
THEM ALL

Every night since I was small, same corner, same result. It comes out six. It has always come out six.

Nobody believes me until I put the hand up, and then nobody says anything at all.

Where it started

THE ISLAND
IS FULL
OF US

The family came off a boat down in Key West. A ship captain left a cat at a writer's house, the cat stayed, and half of that block has been walking around with the extra toe ever since.

The house is still there and so are the cats. Roughly half of them are born with more toes than the standard. That part is not a story I made up on the corner.

NOTHING FITS. I BUY IT ANYWAY.

The guy measures me twice, goes in the back, and comes out with the wrong box every single time. I have stopped correcting him. We both know how this ends.

Corner of the blockSix up

They gave me the board on the corner and asked what the message was. I did not have one, so I just showed them the hand.

SEEN THIS PAW?

Grey, striped, red shirt, smokes on the corner. Answers to nothing. If you find him he is not lost, he lives here.
